STRESS: Have You Looked At Yourself Lately

December 11, 2009

How many times have we dealt with someone and walked away mumbling, "he ought to take a chill pill...whew!!!"

My point is--it's easy to identify stress in other people.  But the million dollar question that you should ask and then answer is--have you looked at yourself lately?

It is unfortunate that we normally allow our personal stress to linger for far too long.  We typically will make an effort to do something about our personal stress when it has just about gotten out of control.  By this time, you are often at that point where perpetual rage has set in.  Not good.

There are huge benefits to be enjoyed if you learn to manage or eliminate stress from your life.  This is one of the topics that I wrote about in my book, "The Top 25 Things You Can Do to Change Your Life For the Better...Forever".

In that chapter, I highlighted how it is important to control your stress if you seek the maximum levels of health and wellness.  When you allow your stress to control you, the inevitable downward spiral takes place.  Before long, you will feel and look as if you've been depleted of your life source.

I'm sure you've seen people that you are acquainted with somehow and noted, after not having seen them in a while, how much they seemed to have aged.

Stress is a mighty foe...a major combatant...principle ravager of quality of life and health and wellness.  Left unchecked, it causes unnecessary spikes to your blood sugar levels, raises blood pressure, causes you to sleep fewer hours, causes you to eat more, causes headaches, stomach aches, back pain and makes you a candidate for long term disease.

So after looking at yourself and acknowledging your stress and stressors, you should think about healthy ways to manage or eliminate your stress.

If you engage in activities or decisions that produce unnecessary stress, your first move is to stop the madness or learn to just say no to those things that you know are going to stress you out.  This is that special time when it's good to be selfish about resisting those things (people included) that produce the stress in your life.

Next, it's a good thing to develop and participate in activities that inherently provide relaxation for you.

Maybe music is an outlet for your.  Maybe art.  Or maybe you have a hobby that you have not enjoyed lately.  Perhaps the active participation in those areas or activities might provide some solace from the stress and become the bridge to a better state of mind.

One surefire antidote is exercise.  Just 30 minutes of some good 'ol fashioned sweat producing exercise can release a battalion of nature's stress fighting chemicals in your body.

Laughter is always good.  Studies have shown that laughter is like a wonder drug when fighting stress.  When combined with exercise, it is like having a magical one-two punch that you can count on when fighting stress.

There are several more approaches that will help you back away from your stress.  Choose those that work for you and make them a part of your life today.

Gratitude: Plant Something

"Life responds to deserve and not
to need. It doesn't say 'If you need
you will reap.' It says 'If you plant
you will reap.'"--Jim Rohn

One of the ways that humans have improved life is by always finding better and easier ways of doing things.

But we can carry that too far. If we think that it's always got to be easy, we're in for disappointment.

I tell my students that obstacles and barriers are the universe's way of finding out if we are serious.

That's why people that think that they can visualize their way to the life of their dreams are doomed to failure.

Visualization is a powerful tool when it's teamed with action, but by itself it's called daydreaming. As Jim Rohn said, you gotta plant if you want to harvest a crop.

The person that is clear about what they want and is willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen is unstoppable.  No matter how "impossible" their dream is.

Think about that.  You can have anything you want if you're willing to do what it takes.  Anything!!

Nothing is impossible for you, unless you think it is.

Be willing to plant today, so you can reap the harvest tomorrow.  You'll be very grateful you did.

And gratitude always creates miracles.

Are You Passionate About Your Work?

Reprinted from daily words of wisdom about Gratitude
from author Wes Hopper of www.DailyGratitude.com.

When I received the daily words of wisdom from Mr. Hopper, a wide smile hit my face.  I was about to write this post and decided that I would address a topic that is near and dear to me.  It has to do with that thing that most people do from 9 to 5--work.

Considering that you spend the majority of your waking hours each week at the workplace, it only makes sense that you do something that does more than provide a pay check.

In fact, the second chapter of my new book, “The Top 25 Things You Can Do to Change Your Life For the Better…Forever” talks about this.  The admonishment is that you identify that thing that you’re passionate about and do that for work.

The following reprint provides a perspective that I’ll offer for your consideration.

“The probability that the first career choice you make is the right
one for you is roughly one in a million.  If you decide to
stick with the first one, chances are you are just
plain lazy.” -- Peter Drucker

Hopper goes on to say, “When I was a kid, the life pattern that was taught to me was ‘get a good education, get a job with a good company and stick with it until you retire.’

That idea was the product of the Great Depression with the primary goal being security.  They didn’t know that they were teaching me to trade fulfillment for security.

I found that out on my own.  And I didn’t like it when I realized it.  In retrospect, I could see it in my Dad’s unhappiness with his job.

He was encouraged to start his own business by a friend who had done it, but he chickened out and kept the ‘security’.  He worked 35 years at a job he didn’t like.

Then he retired, and died.

Are you doing what you love, what you’re passionate about, what you came to earth to do?

Don’t give me any “yadda, yadda” excuses--the answer is either yes or no!

If the answer is no would you be willing to set a firm intention that by this time next year the answer will be yes?

You will be trading a phoney ‘security’ for an exhilarating roller coaster ride of uncertainty and passionate joy!

And you’ll realize that the only real security is taking full responsibility for yourself.

Determine what you’re passionate about and set out to do it.

You’ll be very grateful that you did

And gratitude always creates miracles.”

A Little More About Me

G Simms

As a result of a conversation that I had on yesterday, I am making this post today.

I was engaged in a rather involved conversation with a gentleman about health and wellness.  As I shared my thoughts, he hung on to every word and was truly benefitting from the conversation.  Near the end of the conversation, we exchanged information.  I provided him with my websites and a link to order a copy of my book.  And as was his inquisitive nature, he wanted to know a little more about me.

Well, everyone can click on the About Me button on this site and get that information; however, I decided that I'd use my blog to post a condensed version of the story to provide information in this section of the site because this where most of the focus of this site is.

The posted version is taken from the paperback version of my book, "The Top 25 Things You Can Do to Change Your Life For the Better...Forever".  Naturally, it's from the section About the Author.  It was written for the book anonymously by someone who's followed my work.

It pays to understand a bit about Gary Simms’ background and life experience to truly appreciate his quick direct wit, and oft times profoundly introspective reflections.

Born into a middle-class family in New Orleans, Louisiana during the mid-1950’s, GSimms (his pen name) draws from the focus and discipline of a star youth athlete, the intelligence of a summa cum laude graduate of his college class, the sophistication of an Environmental Communications Executive for a Fortune 100 company, and the savvy of a shrewd businessman/entrepreneur to render unexpected essence and flavor with a unique filter for life and quality living.

Passionate and driven to succeed, Simms has taken what he describes as “one of my very dark personal moments,” to fashion a work that he hopes will contribute significantly to the lives of those wanting to be better and do better.

“When most people discuss achievement and improvement, the goal is oft times for external manifestation,” says Simms, while gazing off and collecting his thoughts. “I am fervent about this and say that the focus should always be internal. You have to improve inside to truly reflect improvement outwardly. You have to be better and when you are, the world will see it.”

His passion has become the enthusiastic pursuit of life, health and wellness. “Far too many people suffer through far less than a great quality of life due to them relinquishing their life responsibility to everyone else--the so-called authorities, media news bites, so-called experts, doctors, etc.,” he says. “I believe the pathway to restoration begins with owning information that is accurate, understandable, and readily accessible.”

GSimms’ valued quips, thoughts, humor and advice is peppered throughout his blogs, articles, podcasts, speeches, presentations, and conversations.

Look for more from GSimms. He plans to continue his work as a health and wellness writer and currently publishes this site, GSimms-TheTop25.com, and http://FYI-HealthandWellness.blogspot.com

Additionally, he’s working on two books that tell of his Hurricane Katrina experiences.

When recently asked to consider developing a site for his unique brand of funny, serious and always insightful social commentary, he responded, “Oh…I will probably have to because we’ve chosen a collective position of numbness about lots of things that somebody should say something about.”

We can’t wait.

And finally, stay tuned for his first novel--a love story that twists and turns in a way that could only be fictional…but perhaps not.

Known for being a “real character” to his close friends, GSimms relishes entertainment yet appreciates his reading and listening audience and respects his platform to inform.

Gratitude--15 Strokes

from author Wes Hopper of www.DailyGratitude.com.

"When you visualize, then you materialize."
--Dr. Denis Waitley

James Nesmith was an Air Force pilot in Vietnam.  Shot down and captured, he spent years in a wire cage so small he could hardly move.

Desperate to find a constructive way to deal with the pain and the endless time he decided to play golf - in his mind.

Every day he pick a course, decided what the wind and weather were, and carefully played 18 holes. He walked every step, carefully prepared every shot, kept mental score.

When he returned from Vietnam and was released from the hospital, he went out to play the first live round of golf in seven years.

His friends were shocked when their high-90s scoring buddy came in with a score in the low 80s - after 7 years in a cage!

Yes, visualization works. The same process Nesmith used to take 15 strokes off his score can work for you. It always does.

The question is - what are you visualizing?

My wife works with people that have been visualizing the flu for several months.  That's all they talked about.  They're all out sick.

Figure out what you want, get the clearest picture you can of what that looks like, and then "play 18 holes" every day.

Sprinkle a big dose of gratitude on that vision, too.  See it as a done deal.

Gratitude always creates miracles.

Focus

December 1, 2009
G Simms

Most writers are also avid readers.

Since I write about health and wellness, it only makes sense that I read lots of material about the field in general and more specifically about related topics that make up this broad field.

In writing my book, “The Top 25 Things You Can Do to Change Your Life For the Better…Forever”, I read volumes of material and talked with hundreds of people to select those 25 topics that make up the book.

Today’s post represents one of the chapter titles that I think is the foundation of any success that you will have in any endeavor that peaks your interest--Focus.  Focus is vital to great health and wellness.  Focus is actually critical to anything that supports a great quality of life.

After speaking with the numbers of people that I did while writing, it dawned on me that focus is a challenge for a lot of people.  Taking the opportunity to look a little further into this, research shows that lack of focus represents one of the major reasons why people feel unfulfilled and are ultimately unsuccessful (considering success is a subjective matter).

My many conversations/interviews with people pointed to a few things that bare mentioning.  I’ll state them by putting them in the form of a question so that you can consider them on a personal level.

- Do you have a problem keeping your eye on the prize?

- What are your goals?

- When asked about your goals, can you list them or do you list those things that you don’t want?

- Do you know how to focus?

- Do you set goals?

- Do you implement a plan to achieve your goals?

All of us fall short at some point but the goal here is to merely have you consider this topic and encourage you to take action that would allow you to become a better you.

As you move toward strengthening your ability to gain focus, you may have to consider a few things that will help you along the way.

You’ll learn how to keep going when you have arrived at your point of frustration--that point where it’s easy to quit or give up. You’ll have to develop the ability to get things done in a way that avoids distractions and the need to multi-task. You’ll have to learn how to overcome procrastination. You’ll have to learn how to concentrate and acknowledge a task or opportunity, then do those things that are truly important.

In mastering focus, you actually open the door to greater levels of achievement and will be on your way to a much more fulfilling life that is not fraught with your current levels of stress.

Why I Wrote a Health and Wellness Book

November 30, 2009
G Simms
GSimms-HealthandWellness.com

I recently had the good fortune of speaking with an aspiring writer (college student) who learned that I was a writer.  Upon his learning that I had just completed a book on health and wellness/self improvement, among his many questions, he asked me the question that I routinely get whenever I talk with people about my book.  Why did I choose to write this book?

As always, my answer is immediate and two-fold.

First, know what I learned from my personal experience with a life altering health crisis (heart-related condition), I have a perspective that can help many who are trying to deal with health challenges.  Secondly, if you are among that population of people who wish to avoid health problems, I can help you avoid challenges by making accurate health information available to you so that you can make better choices.

For the past 25 months, Health and Wellness has been more than a preoccupation for me.  Health and Wellness has been a way of life because this has been the core of my recovery from my health crisis--a situation that totally blind sided me.

The decision to do what I’m doing now was sparked while I was still in the hospital--a place that was my temporary residence for some 24 days in October of 2007.  While mentally committing to regaining my health, I vowed that once I walked out of that hospital I would use my divinely given talent as a writer/communicator to create a work that might benefit those who desperately needed it.

As a result, my book, “The Top 25 Things You Can Do to Change Your Life For The Better…Forever” was born along with GSimms-HealthandWellness.com, FYI-HealthandWellness.blogspot.com, GSimms-TheTop25.com, and the ultimately the company GSimms.com (site still to be launched).

The mission is simple--publish good information that will help you make better choices.

Even in the midst of an ever broadening field of individuals and professionals working to make this area more and more visible to the general public, my endeavors are solely motivated by my experience.  I walk this walk daily as my personal prescription to living in a wholesome manner.  My book, blogs and articles come from my diary for healthy living.

The mission has become a lifestyle and a movement.

Welcome aboard and do enjoy.

Let me know how you’re feeling.

More Gratitude

Earlier in the week of Thanksgiving, I received an email from the administrators of a website that I have affiliation with--RedRoom.com.

This is a website that functions as an excellent portal for writers of all sorts.

As it turned out, they were asking for blog posts about "Gratitude".  This request is quite appropriate for this time of year.  And even though I did not plan it this way, this request was also timely for me as I had just finished my health and wellness/self improvement book, "The Top 25 Things You Can Do to Change Your Life For the Better...Forever".

One of the book's chapters is devoted to the subject of gratitude.

So why not.  I made this chapter available to the audience of RedRoom readers by posting it on that site as a blog post.

And of course, this is something else for which I am grateful.  Because less than 20 hours later, this post is now listed in the number two spot on the internet in its section on the first page of some 2,970,000 results.

To see the actual post, simply click on www.redroom.com/blogs/new and click on the blog post on Gratitude by Gary M. Simms.

The point to all of this is that I am truly grateful for being able to do what I do.  I research, write and share.

On a daily basis, I am one of those fortunate ones who gets to re-energize by taking in all that life has to offer.  I try to capture some of that and share it in the pieces that I write.

Please go to that site and enjoy.

Additionally, I invite you to order a copy of my new book, "The Top 25 Things You Can Do to Change Your Life For The Better...Forever" by going to www.GSimms-TheTop25.com.  As an extra bonus listed here and where ever this article is reprinted, I will give away a free copy of another book entitled "The Astonishing Power of Gratitude" by Wes Hopper.

Your world can change for the better, but the choice is yours.

Gratitude

November 26, 2009
GSimms
GSimms-HealthandWellness.com

Today's post is taken right out of my new book, "The Top 25 Things You Can Do To Change Your Life For the Better...Forever", published by GSimms.com.

This post is actually one of the chapters and is entitled "Be Grateful or Show Gratitude".

Do enjoy!!!

Webster's unabridged dictionary defines gratitude as the quality or feeling of being grateful or thankful.

As a result of the many recent published works on the natural laws of the universe ("The Secret" being the most popular among those works), more attention is now being given to qualities that had previously been discounted or judged as antiquated.

The qualities of humility, thankfulness and gratitude have a way of balancing you in a world that too easily will disparage those who demonstrate them by attaching to them such labels as being weak, fragile or lacking toughness.

Truth is, the universe is a place that functions by rules that most of us would rather usurp.  Since we are not by any standard equal to the universe, it is a better bet to exist in its harmony rather than oppose it.

So, count your blessings and acknowledge your very existence with gratitude. Take time (sometime during the day or evening) to do some deep breathing and reflect on those things that are good in your life (even those things that you take for granted like your health...the fact that you can see...that you're able to smell...that you're able to walk, etc.).  Express being grateful for all of the wonderful things in your life--especially for the people who bring you joy and inspiration.

Think about this for a minute.  Those of you who are parents know the sense of well being felt when your children show gratitude for those things that you've done for them.  Your natural reaction is to do more for your children and provide that feeling for them more frequently.  Now, while your expressions of gratitude should not be done with self-centered expectation, the universe has a way of granting gifts to those who are grateful for what it has already given them.

Living with gratitude opens your heart and makes life much more enjoyable.  When you're ungrateful and resentful, you will be more stressed and pump out cortisol more often than normal.

Cortisol makes you fat, age prematurely and is associated with practically every disease known to man.  On the other hand, gratitude opens your heart, frees your mind and is the platform for great health and wellness.

Pick up a copy of my book, "The Top 25 Things You Can Do To Change Your Life For the Better...Forever" today.  It's only $11 and available at www.GSimms-TheTop25.com.
